Ellen DeGeneres has just announced that her show will be ending after her upcoming 19th season. She first made the announcement to her staff on May 11, and has also said that she will be sitting down with Oprah on the 13th to discuss her decision. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter she stated, “When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged – and as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore.”
This decision has been a few years coming. In 2018 she revealed that her wife (Portia de Rossi) had been encouraging her to leave the show for some time, and said that the 180 shows a year schedule was incredibly taxing on her. At the same time, she was also being urged to continue on with the show by her brother, as well as executives at Warner Bros. In the end Ellen decided that 19 would be the magic number of seasons.
The past year has also brought a good amount of controversy to Ellen. A Buzzfeed News expose brought allegations from ex-employees stating that Ellen made the workplace toxic, with several forms of harassment and intimidation towards her employees.
