Today, April 22nd, is Earth Day! In honour of that, here are some things that you can do to help the planet:
- Plant Trees and Gardens: Plant trees to clean the air, or create a pollinator garden with flowers like lavender and marigolds to support bees and butterflies.
- Neighborhood Clean-up: Join a local, organized cleanup event or simply pick up trash while walking in your community or a local park.
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Focus on zero-waste initiatives. Repair broken items instead of replacing them, compost food scraps, and avoid single-use plastics.
- Support Biodiversity: Build a DIY pollinator-friendly habitat or install bird feeders to help local wildlife.
- Energy Conservation: Turn off unnecessary lights, unplug electronics to stop “phantom” energy drain, and switch to energy-efficient LED bulbs.
- Eco-Friendly Education: Read, watch a documentary on environmental issues, or teach children about the importance of protecting nature.
- Sustainable Transportation: Walk, bike, carpool, or use public transit to reduce your carbon footprint.
- Go Paperless: Switch to electronic billing for all your utilities and banking to reduce paper waste.
- Shop Local: Buy food from local farmers’ markets to reduce transportation emissions.
No gesture is too small. If each of us took the time to do something each day, it would make a huge impact to the overall health and well being of our planet.
Locally, the Georgian Bluffs Climate Action team is a dedicated group of volunteers who are committed to affecting change.
